Hello, I'm Robert.

I've spent more than a decade in enterprise IT, the kind of environments where a mistake takes down something important, so you learn to work carefully, document everything, and never wing it. Much of that has been in the payments and fintech space, where security and reliability aren't optional extras.

Dalziel Digital is where I bring that same discipline to businesses that don't have an IT department: sole traders, small firms, and startups who need something done properly but don't want to be buried in acronyms to get it.

How I work

• Plain English, always. If I can't explain it simply, I haven't understood it well enough. You'll never be talked down to.
• Honest scoping. If you don't need something, I'll say so. I'd rather do less and be trusted than oversell and not.
• Careful and reversible. The same change-control habits I use on enterprise systems, so things don't break, and if they do, they can be undone.
• You stay in control. Everything documented and handed over. No holding your own IT hostage.

Background

Ten-plus years in IT, working my way up through the industry. I started in support at Dell EMC, progressing from first line to second line to Quality Lead, where I learned that the technical fix is only half the job and how you communicate it matters just as much. From there I moved into software development at Tracis, then into infrastructure and systems engineering, including work in the payments and fintech sector.

Most recently I've spent years managing enterprise Proxmox and vSphere environments, Linux fleets across Red Hat, Debian, Ubuntu and Rocky, Docker and container orchestration, monitoring stacks, and CI/CD automation with tools like Ansible, Terraform and Azure Pipelines, alongside Windows endpoint security, patching and compliance. It's given me a broad, hands-on view of how real systems are built and kept running.

Qualifications & training

I hold an HND in Software Development from City of Glasgow College, and over my career I've trained and certified across Microsoft, AWS and security disciplines. I keep my skills current through hands-on work rather than resting on badges, and I'll always be straight about what I do and don't have direct experience with.

I have also previously worked as an IASME-certified Cyber Essentials assessor, which means I've reviewed real certification submissions from the assessor's side of the table. That's genuinely useful when helping businesses prepare for the scheme.
